Silverton mused about the possibilities of a small shop that catered to people of all ages, similar to those that she’d experienced in Italy. Both Gail and Nancy Silverton are enamored of Italy and each owns a home in Panicale, a small village in Umbria. “I remember tasting my first gelato at Il Gelato Vivoli when I visited Florence in 1979,” says Silverton. “I saw a line of customers and then I saw the display case with a stunning burst of colors that just popped. From the taste of my first hazelnut gelato, I knew that I had never had anything quite like it.” Clearly, this was something she wanted to enjoy back home, with the same quality and authenticity.
After a three year search, patiently waiting for just the right space to become available, Gail finally found the perfect space in Tujunga Village for her vision. It took nearly a year to learn everything she could about gelato and to locate the perfect furnishings to design the space as she’d imagined it.
Within just a few months of opening, Gelato Bar has already cultivated a steady stream of regulars eager to try the day’s newest flavor or to have a cup of Silverton’s specially selected coffees. The store has rapidly become a natural part of the neighborhood, just as she had hoped.
Gail has three children, Andreas, Nikolas and Annika. She and her business partner, Joel, plan to marry in June of 2007. Her favorite flavors of gelato are Pistachio, Nutella and Arancia Rossa.
